GOSPEL OAK - BARKING ELECTRIFICATION

CHALLENGE

Five sections of track have been lowered between Walthamstow Queens Road and Gospel Oak stations to create space for overhead wires and structures that carry them. Ten bridges have been reconstructed or strengthened and three electrical power switching stations have been constructed. The need for this extensive civil engineering work sets the project apart from other electrification schemes and explains why the route has not been electrified earlier.

SOLUTION

A huge and detailed 4D model simulating civil construction works and train movements along the 14 mile-long section of railway, between Gospel Oak and Barking, supported Network Rail’s pro-active management of the 12-month programme of works.

BENEFITS

"Freeform’s 4D model allows us to ensure that one group of people won’t clash with another, and that there isn’t going to be an engineering train parked in front of an access point. We can avoid all those things that would waste time, so we can plan everything to a tighter timeframe." ROB FAIRHEAD PROJECT SPONSOR NETWORK RAIL
